Let us safeguard our heritage a Future forecast

Heritage has a wider meaning; it goes beyond the explanation you’ll find in the dictionary. Heritage is everything tangible and intangible we inherit from our predecessors.
It is all that I am surrounded by. I was born in royal family of Jethabhai Sheth Patel, in a pol that bears the name of my ancestors. My schooling was done on the other side of river and I got to see two different worlds — one was culturally, aesthetically and artistically sound and other in a race with the metros.
In the pol, the day begins before sunrise, a prabhat feri marks the beginning of a day. An old system of panch ( the group of five important and reputed people from the pol ) oversee the goings-on in a pol.
However, today the pol culture is vanishing rapidly. The pols are now prey for land mafias and faces the threat of being wiped out by modernity. I really miss the old days when a string of celebrations went on throughout the year in the pols!
Government needs to create awareness on heritage buildings The lakkadiya vaidh who sold ayurvedic medicines in pols once upon a time is nowhere to be seen. Neither are the earthen toys and the joy of festivities.
These days heritage homes are being replaced by aesthetically poor new buildings and pigeon-hole apartments that are part of unimpressive town planning.
We do not even have a platform where people can discuss these issues and come up with solutions for the same. Also, there is scarcity of funds to preserve our valuable heritage.
I fully support the commercial activities that are being undertaken with an intention of preserving our heritage like converting a haveli to a boutique or restaurant.
I would suggest developing a heritage mall in a pol where best brands are made available and you have art galleries and book stores. That will draw people from across the city to the pols and help them reconnect with heritage. I also urge those investing in farmhouses to buy themselves a haveli that can be used for summer retreat.
Also, why not spend your weekend in the pol? I really miss the hustle and bustle that used to be an intrinsic characteristic of the pols. These days it looks as if a curfew has been imposed here. I hope 2011 gets the residential nooks of Ahmedabad’s walled city its lost glory.
Havelis can be converted into art galleries, supermalls, restaurants, boutiques, bookstores
